Week 6- Biotech and Art

Going over this weeks information I learned about biotechnology and art and how they correlate with each other. Many artists have different interpretations of biotechnology based on work in the laboratories with tissues, different cellular levels and scientific imaging. The official definition of biotechnology is “ the exploitation of biological processes for industrial and other purposes, especially the genetic manipulation of microorganisms for the production of antibiotics, hormones.” Biotechnology  Audio Microscope I also learned about genomes and how their information is participates in our growth and development. Joe Davis is the pioneer of bioart and genomes. Davis designed the Audio Microscope, which shows living cells while simultaneously listening to their greatly amplified species and micro acoustic signatures. The English author and physicist Charles Percy Snow wrote the idea of “Two Cultures”, which debated the difference of literary and science intellectuals. This debate argued many voices between non-scientist and scientist. In Snow’s novel he states that when science was taking over literary intellectuals believed that literature was the leading subject. I believe that both non-scientist and scientist make arguments and counter-arguments about both sides in the world we live in today. Brockman, who wrote the novel “Third Culture”, described his ideas of technology about art and science. His ideas show that humans display us how we live between conversations, which relates to his main idea of art and science. These ideas of the two cultures relate to myself and to all of UCLA because we live in one of the most cultured cities in the world, Los Angeles. In this weeks material we talked about the combination of space and art and how it has influenced our lives. I found this topic to be very interesting because without the advancements of these two topics our history wouldn’t be the same. Heliocentric Model Nicolaus Copernicus who was very smart, studied law, math and also studied astronomy. Copernicus used his mathematical talents to be very detailed in his work, which led to his heliocentric model in 1512. In this model he had the sun in the middle of the solar system but slightly off set. Copernicus work was so influential to astronomers and others that you can see him on Polish money, space, rockets and a crater on the moon.
